Hey, Listen! Netflix is Developing a Live-Action LEGEND OF ZELDA Series

Thought you’d never live to see the day where Hyrule came to life on your TV screen? Netflix has four words for you: “Well, excuuuuuuuuuuuuse me, princess!”

That’s right — according to The Wall Street Journal, Netflix is “working closely with Nintendo” to develop a live-action series based on the massively popular The Legend of Zelda series. For those of you who don’t know — and if so, where have you been — the series follows a boy named Link who must rescue the eponymous Princess Zelda and save the realm of Hyrule from all manner of evildoers. It’s still early in the development process, but Netflix is describing it as “Game of Thrones for a family audience,” a description which has both piqued my interest and raised my eyebrows.

Don’t start throwing your rupees at the screen just yet; Netflix is still actively searching for a writer to work on the series, so for now it’s still wearing the Iron Boots of Hollywood development. Still, this is one of the most surprising bits of news in recent memory. In light of how protective Nintendo has been of its video game properties in the past, particularly after the 1989 Legend of Zelda animated series and the truly baffling 1993 Super Mario Bros. film, this feels like it’s coming out of left field. Still, considering Netflix’s track record with original series thus far and the state of modern television, now seems like as good of a time as any to bring Link, Zelda, Ganondorf, Epona, Navi, and the gang to glorious live-action.

If nothing else, hopefully we’ll see this on the small screen:

We’ll continue to report on this as the story develops.

  2. Gildogg says:

I would love to see this but if they haven’t even started writing yet I’m not holding my breath

  3. Neal says:

    WINDWAKER!!!!!!!!!

  4. Carin says:

Ocarina of time 64 style can be split up into 2 seasons alone. Everyone I talk to about Zelda favorites this particular game  over the others.

Ocarina of time 64 style can be split into 2 seasons. Everyone I talk to about Zelda favorites this particular game. It would be like a long movie then.

  6. nnm says:

I’d love for netflix to do something of a Prince of Persia or Assassins Creed type theme.

  7. Mark Baland says:

Forget live action. Make Zelda and Mario and Donkey Kong series in CGI, like Pixar or Dreamworks quality, with big screen movies too. And why no Nintendoland or MarioWorld theme parks yet? C’mon, Nintendo!

  8. Brad says:

Honestly, I could get over the actors being a little off in appearance. I’d much rather they get the essence of the characters right. Though I think they’d be wise to give Link some kind of voice-box related injury early on.

  9. T says:

YESSSS. Why the hell not?! It’s time for Link to take over. Netflix, pls do this good.

  10. Adventureless_Hero says:

Tasty. I’m ready for this to happen. If it sucks, we’ll just lock it under the stairs with the LoZ CDi games.

  11. Elendae says:

They better find somebody super freaking cute to play Link, if this is not a really elaborate joke, and he better LOOK like LINK, not this modern, short-hair, crew-cut Link, but legitimately Link. If he doesn’t have luscious locks, I quit.

I understand how this might sound shallow, but I’ve been playing Zelda for years and years and years, I don’t want “new American Zelda”, I want Nintendo, Japanese Zelda, thank you.

  12. Lorule says:

I always wanted something like this. Except I imagined it would have certain parts that take place among the different eras from the games.

  13. Heavyy says:

Using a shield and bomb to propel yourself is something that speedrunners do everyday… It’s called a WESS and a HESS.  So, it’s not really shameful to have that be a thing.

  14. Josh says:

    No…I got movies ready. 🙁

  15. Chris says:

It should be based off of A Link to the Past, or Twilight Princess.

  16. MJB says:

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO

  18. Rebecca says:

They must get Thomas Brodie-Sangster to play Link if this really happens.  http://41.media.tumblr.com/78fb971187f4ee6b7b656f10ca64c379/tumblr_nh63xi0wMg1rqvn73o1_500.jpg
