Blizzard Gives HEROES OF THE STORM an Epic Anime Short

Blizzard has earned a reputation for creating high quality animated shorts that tie into its various video games, from the Disney-inspired Hearthstone piece to the Overwatch stories that compare favorably to some of Pixar’s best work. But this week, Blizzard briefly stepped away from its signature 3D animation for an anime short based upon MechaStorm, the latest skins update for Heroes of the Storm. And while the short is light on plot, it’s heavy on style and action, as well as the insanely over-the-top visuals. Now this is something that we’d love to see more of in the near future.

Via Polygon, the short introduces the new Mecha skins for the heroic Rehgar and Tyrael, as well as a Xenotech upgrade for the villainous Abathur. The two minute short features stunning animation and a hilariously appropriate guitar-powered soundtrack that makes it look like something that could have premiered in the ’80s and ’90s peak of mecha-based anime. It’s a dazzling treat for the eyes, and we want more.

The Mecha Tyrael, Mecha Rehgar, and Xenotech Abathur skins are now available within Heroes of the Storm, and they won’t be the last to hit this year. Blizzard reportedly has plans to continue releasing new Heroes of the Storm skins throughout 2018. These characters may not have been the first to get the mecha treatment within the game, but we’re now in favor of every remaining character getting their own mecha anime makeover. Especially if it means more shorts like this one.
