Hayao Miyazaki is an international treasure. A weaver of dreams, a teller of stories and the master animator behind some of the most beautiful films ever made. This winter fans will get a glimpse at mind behind Studio Ghibli as GKIDS releases Never-Ending Man: Hayao Miyazaki, a documentary about the creator’s plans to quit and the new project which brought him back to animation.
The short trailer highlights the intimate nature of the documentary that will follow Miyazaki after he retires (again) and decides that he actually has one more story to tell, that of Boro the Caterpillar. We get to see Miyazaki sketching out the creation and eventually learning how to digitally animate him. It’s a heartfelt trailer which really showcases the artist’s need to create and gives us some lovely personal moments that we rarely get from icons like Miyazaki.
Tonally this seems like it’s going to be a really special experience, sitting somewhere between an exploration of what makes us want to create, and a personal journey into what drives Hayao Miyazaki and his brilliant creations. We can’t wait to watch the gorgeous documentary when it’s released via Fathom events on December 13th and December 18th. You can grab your tickets for the event right here.
Will you be journeying to the theatre to see the magical world of Hayao Miyazaki come to life? Just want to see Boro The Caterpillar right now? Grab your broomstick, moving castle, or spirit dragon and let us know below!
