We Americans celebrate our hard-won independence from the United Kingdom on July 4th. But on July 11th, the apes will celebrate their hard-won freedom from us! That’s when director Matt Reeves’ Dawn of the Planet of the Apes roles into theaters nationwide. To celebrate our Independence Day (y’know, while we still can and all), Fox has released a special Fourth of July trailer for Dawn, coupling images from the film with a historic audio recording of the great President John F. Kennedy himself. You can watch it below, before you head back outside to grill hamburgers.
The advance word on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has been tremendous, and Fox is so happy with Reeves’ efforts that they’ve already got the director developing the next Apes movie’s script. (Always a good sign.) Having interviewed Reeves about his film a couple of months back, I gotta admit that everything he said about his decisions regarding Dawn — from his cast to his choice to shoot on location in rain-soaked Northern California to the amount of time that’s passed since Rise of the Planet of the Apes — made total and complete sense to me. So I’m just as excited to see the film next week as I am to see any movie this summer. Even if it does chronicle the eventual downfall of my species.
