Halle Berry Joins a Growing KINGSMAN Franchise

Spoiler Alert: There are spoilers for Kingsman: The Secret Service below.

Though I’m sure more than a few of us are hoping that Colin Firth’s character in Kingsman: The Secret Service will rise from the dead in the grand tradition of comic book adaptations, it was pretty exciting to read the Deadline exclusive this morning that Halle Berry has signed on to the 2017-anticipated sequel, Kingsman 2. She is signed up to star as the head of the CIA, and it’s a two picture deal so we can look forward to seeing the popular movie from last year fully launch into franchise mode.

Not many details on the sequel are known, and given the bloodbath that was the ending of the first movie, it’s hard to anticipate what direction the new films will take. So far only Taron Egerton and Julianne Moore have been announced officially as cast and added to the IMDB roster, though this morning’s announcement will surely change that. Kingsman: The Secret Service launched Egerton to stardom as the protégé of Colin Firth’s Lancelot, and by the film’s end, he was virtually the only one left standing. One can’t help but notice that the only two announcements of casting for the sequel feature two women with star power, so maybe there will be a shift from the first film’s male-dominated cast?

More interestingly, the news of Berry’s developing two-picture deal suggests that producers are already looking to expand the franchise beyond Kingsman 2. The immediate assumption is that the unspecified second film in question is simply Kingsman 3, but we can’t necessarily rule out a branching off of the Kingsman storyline in the fashion of the MCU or the developing DC Comics Cinematic Universe.

Kingsman 2 is set to be released June 16, 2017 with Matthew Vaughn directing and a script by Vaughn and Jane Goldman. Together they adapted Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons‘s comic book of the same name for the original film, and hopefully their continued partnership means we can expect just as many explosions and as much fun in the sequel.
