Guillermo del Toro’s THE STRAIN Will Return for Season Two

After making its debut earlier this summer, the television adaptation of Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s vampire trilogy The Strain will get a second season order from FX, Global News has reported. The series, shot in Toronto, stars Corey Stoll (who will be joining the cast of Marvel’s Ant-Man as Darren Cross/Yellowjacket), Mia Maestro, Sean Astin and David Bradley. Global News also reports that production is scheduled to resume in Toronto in November of this year.

FX describes The Strain as,”a high concept thriller” centered around Dr. Ephraim Goodweather. Goodweather is the head of the CDC Canary Team operating out of New York City. When a plan lands in the city with all passengers on board dead, Goodweather and the Canary Team report to the scene. What they end up discovering is an ancient vampiric force determined to spread. The first three seasons will allegedly follow the trajectory of the three novels in the series.

The ratings for the freshman genre drama have yo-yoed a bit since the series premiered in July, although the show is doing well for FX — even if it hasn’t permeated the cultural zeitgeist the way its network horror counterpart American Horror Story has. That said, it is worth noting that the show’s eyeball/ worm advertising campaign creeped enough people out that the Los Angeles billboards were eventually removed, so the series definitely made an impact upon arrival.

What about you, Nerdist readers? Are you all watching The Strain? Are you enjoying its scary, silly goodness? Are del Toro and Hogan’s vampires keeping you up at night? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.

The Strain airs Sundays on FX.

  5. Holly G says:

Definitely watching it. But the only character I find myself caring about is Abraham. As of the most recent episode, he is the most developed of the leads. Although I’m most interested to see how our ‘Rat Hunter’ come fits into the story. Looking forward to seeing how the rest of season1 plays out.

Wow. Grammar much? “Come fits into the story” should have been “fits into the story” Go me.

  6. David L says:

Watch it and love the different take, but agree with Josh T.  Please develop the characters or move the plot along.  It seems the imminent outbreak is not imminently outbreaking like it should.  seems too slow to be urgent, but maybe I am just impatient.

  7. I’m watching it.. It’s ok. They really need to work on their character development though, because I don’t care about any of them. If the take on vampirism wasn’t different than the usual run of the mill crap, I’d of turned it off already. Right now I’m just holding on hoping that it will become something more.
