Riding high off their Golden Globes wins on Sunday for Transparent, Amazon Studios has given Guillermo del Toro’s long-gestating fantastical TV show, Carnival Row,the go-ahead on the development front.

Originally tied to director Tarsem Singh who later moved on to other things, the series was acquired by Legendary this past year with del Toro in mind. Carnival Row is said to be a Victorian-set noir world where fairies and other magical creatures coexist with humans. The pilot centers on an investigation of a serial killer preying on said magical beings but — and OH TWIST, ya’ll — the detective at the center of the case ends up becoming its prime suspect. Dun dun DUUUUUN!

The original script, written by Pacific Rim scribe Travis Beacham, will get a co-rewrite from del Toro and Rene Echevarria. Del Toro will also direct the pilot. Del Toro and Gary Ungar will exec produce the series, adding more TV endeavors to their co-arsenal.

A co-arsenal that involves FX’s The Strain, this will be del Toro’s second fantasy-based TV endeavor in as many years. He’s already in production on season two of the vampiric series, slated to return to FX in July.

It’s an exciting time for projects as ambitious and fantastical as Carnival Row — particularly utilizing non-traditional distribution networks like Netflix, Amazon, and the like. As the shift towards more innovative, unique, exciting, and original content — regardless of its home — continues, studios and production companies (and networks) will be forced to take bigger chances on more ambitious storytelling.
