Director Guillermo del Toro is never without a long list of films heâd like to make â it’s one of the many things we love about him. And this year’s Comic-Con International was no exception, with del Toro revealing that he also has a dream project set within the Star Wars universe!
âI would do the sort of Godfather saga that Jabba the Hutt had to go through to gain control,â said del Toro. âOne, because itâs the character that looks the most like me, and I like him. I love the idea of a Hutt type of mafia, a very complex coup. I just love the character.â
Del Toro added that, âThis is not real, this is me as a fat geek just geeking out and talking about it,â to ensure that the Star Wars rumor mill doesnât go into hyperspace with this one.
It seems like every filmmaker and screenwriter has their own favorite Star Wars character to follow up on. It was only a few months ago that Damon Lindelof shared his desire to make a movie about Lobot, the right hand cyborg of Lando Calrissian.
There was actually a backstory for Jabba in place before the Star Wars Expanded Universe was wiped away for The Force Awakens. In the original origin story, Jabba’s bloody rise to power came when he murdered the offspring of his uncle, Jiliac Desilijic Tiron. But the way is clear for someone new to rewrite Jabbaâs history for the big screen.
Del Toroâs next film, Crimson Peak will hit this October, and he is expected to begin filming Pacific Rim 2 this fall for a 2017 release. Whether del Toro will ever get a chance to tell Jabbaâs origin remains to be seen, but weâd love to see it!
