Guillermo Del Toro & Hideo Kojima’s SILENT HILLS Officially Canceled

After much speculation, Konami has announced that the new Silent Hills title–which was to merge the brilliant minds of both Hideo Kojima and Guillermo Del Torro–has been officially canceled. Speculation ran rampant yesterday after Matt Hackney tweeted out Guillermo Del Torro’s statement, “It’s not gonna happen and that breaks my greasy heart.”. Not being clear on exactly what wasn’t going to happen, the most optimistic of us hoped the tweet was vague on purpose. Unfortunately, it wasn’t.

The news came from a statement made to Kotaku by Konami:

Konami is committed to new Silent Hill titles, however the embryonic ‘Silent Hills’ project developed with Guillermo del Toro and featuring the likeness of Norman Reedus will not be continued.

In terms of Kojima and Del Toro being involved, discussions on future Silent Hill projects are currently underway, and please stay tuned for further announcements.

The game was announced last year through a playable teaser on PSN called P.T., which proceeded to blow up on the web. It featured true horror and some impressive puzzles– some that even required you to use voice input and speak through your microphone. Only in a Kojima game! Solving the final puzzle revealed that this was indeed Silent Hills, starring The Walking Dead fan favorite, Norman Reedus. As sad as this news may be, it comes as no surprise for those that have been following the fall out between Hideo Kojima and Konami. The writing was on the wall. In hindsight, the announcement that P.T. was being pulled from PSN was a pretty clear message.

This isn’t the first title with such high potential to be canceled, and unfortunately it won’t be the last. This one just stings a bit more since so many of us got to experience a portion of the game’s concept already. It is not everyday a horror game gets so much praise. Just like the Metal Gear franchise, it will be interesting to see where Konami will take Silent Hill, and whether they can get the community as excited for it as they were for P.T.

Hopefully this marks the end of the drama ensuing from the fall out. If you have yet to enjoy what could have been, we suggest you go download P.T. ASAP since it will be removed from the PlayStation store this week. It won’t be too long until there are PS4s being sold online for a ridiculous price with the teaser included. Don’t stay silent and make your way down to the comments section below so we can all mourn together. Let us know what you want to see from future Silent Hill installments.
