Has Guillermo Del Toro pulled a James Cameron? The notoriously prolific filmmaker apparently has big-ass plans for Pacific Rim, his franchise about big-ass robots fighting big-ass monsters. Del Toro revealed that there are plans for two more films to follow up the story of the 2013 sci-fi slugfest, in addition to the previously confirmed animated series that will serve as connective tissue between the first two films. If this comes as a surprise to your or in case you can’t experience the emotion known as joy that accompanies seeing a giant robot use an ocean liner as a baseball bat, then perhaps cold, hard numbers will sway you. The film pulled in $100 million at the domestic box office, and garnered another $300 million wordlwide, performing well enough for Legendary to greenlight a sequel. Note that I said “sequel”; nothing has been confirmed in regards to a Pacific Rim 3 yet. So far, it’s just based on what Del Toro has implied in interviews.
Speaking with Collider about The Book of Life, Del Toro addressed a question about Pacific Rim 2, revealing that “some of your favorite characters come back, some others don’t because we have decided that we’re going to shoot ambitiously and say ‘Let’s hope we have three movies,’ so some characters come in at the end of the second, hoping that it will ramp up on the third one.†Which characters will be returning? According to an interview Del Toro did with Metro, “80% of the characters [in the sequel] are new. Of course you get Newton and Gottlieb, you get Raleigh and Mako,” but the rest will be brand new to us. Based on what Del Toro has said, one can safely infer that Pacific Rim 2 will end on a cliffhanger of sorts and some of the newer characters may not appear until closer to the end, setting them up to take center stage in an eventual Pacific Rim 3. Hey, as long as you guys turn that Oculus Rift experience from San Diego Comic-Con into a full-fledged game, you can do whatever you damn well please.

Seriously as long as Charlie Hunnam is in it, I will be happy!! Because clearly he was alive in the End of the first one with him and Makko sharing a kiss, soooooooo clearly they’re a couple!! And I would think it would make sense that he comes back in the Sequel!!
Um, except for the part where Del Toro has gone on record saying it’s not a romantic connection. But hey, that’s what fanfic is for.
You might want to rewatch the end again because at absolutely no point do Raleigh and Mako share a kiss.

Absolutely excited for this. I was so sad that it does so poorly here domestically. Del Toro kept that old school Monster Movie feel in this and it was treated with underwhelming box office results.
