GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY’s James Gunn Shares Early Yondu Concept Art

Michael Rooker‘s Yondu in Guardians of the Galaxy might have been as pretty as an angel, but it turns out an original design for the character had him looking a lot more like a blue Aztec warrior. One with some killer abs.

Director and frequent social media user James Gunn shared a piece of original concept art on Instagram. The piece was drawn by Andrew Kim in 2013 for the leader of the Ravagers. The leather coat and layers worn by Yondu in the movie are nowhere to be found, and in their place is a cape and a much fiercer looking combatant, one with a much taller mohawk and an eye patch.

We first saw this very different, very cool piece at Heroic Hollywood, and as much as we love it we can’t help but imagine him screaming “Are you not entertained!” the more we look at it.

This depiction of Yondu would have given the character a much different vibe. While obviously not afraid of a fight, Rooker’s Yondu had an easy coolness to him. He was apt to threaten you with a sly smile, while the above Yondu would have been intimidating just from his appearance.

It is interesting though that both versions saw Yondu wearing a raised collar, so obviously for Gunn some things about the character were not negotiable. A raised collar says a lot about who someone is.

How do you think Guardians would have been different with this other version of Yondu? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.
