Is a New GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Character a Marvel First?

The sequel to director James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy is officially underway, as Marvel Studios has announced that principal photography has begun on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. What’s more, the studio also confirmed the long rumored casting of some newcomers to the MCU, including Kurt Russell.

Although Marvel Studios has still not revealed which character he will portray, it’s widely believed that Russell will be the father of Star-Lord, who is also possibly the villain of the movie. Actress Pom Klementieff was also included in the announcement; it’s rumored that she will play Mantis, a heroine who was a member of the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy in Marvel’s comic book universe.

The two other new additions to the cast are Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, The Night Manager) and Chris Sullivan (The Knick), but it’s currently unknown which roles they will play. But we have some theories on the former’s role especially—so we’re breaking them down in today’s Nerdist News.

As we can see from the photo accompanying the announcement, it’s clear that Groot has not yet recovered his size after being reborn in the closing minutes of the first film. But we’d be willing to bet that Groot’s return to his signature stature will take place during a dramatic moment in the sequel. And somehow, we all know what Groot is gonna say when that happens.

This is all that Marvel had to say about the film’s story: “Set to the all-new sonic backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will drop into theaters on May 5, 2017.

Who do you think Russell and the rest will play in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2? And which songs will be on Awesome Mixtape # 2? Share your predictions below!
