The sequel to director James Gunnâs Guardians of the Galaxy is officially underway, as Marvel Studios has announced that principal photography has begun on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. What’s more, the studio also confirmed the long rumored casting of some newcomers to the MCU, including Kurt Russell.
Although Marvel Studios has still not revealed which character he will portray, it’s widely believed that Russell will be the father of Star-Lord, who is also possibly the villain of the movie. Actress Pom Klementieff was also included in the announcement; itâs rumored that she will play Mantis, a heroine who was a member of the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy in Marvelâs comic book universe.
The two other new additions to the cast are Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, The Night Manager) and Chris Sullivan (The Knick), but itâs currently unknown which roles they will play. But we have some theories on the former’s role especiallyâso we’re breaking them down in today’s Nerdist News.
As we can see from the photo accompanying the announcement, it’s clear that Groot has not yet recovered his size after being reborn in the closing minutes of the first film. But we’d be willing to bet that Groot’s return to his signature stature will take place during a dramatic moment in the sequel. And somehow, we all know what Groot is gonna say when that happens.
This is all that Marvel had to say about the film’s story: “Set to the all-new sonic backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the teamâs adventures as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quillâs true parentage.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will drop into theaters on May 5, 2017.
