GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Director James Gunn Wants to Use Two FANTASTIC FOUR Villains

We still don’t know who will serve as the main villain in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which is currently filming. However, thanks to a recent Facebook Q&A with director James Gunn, we’ve got a little insight into who it may have been, in the filmmaker’s perfect world.

As noted by Cinemablend, Gunn said “I would love the [Fantastic Four] to be a part of the MCU…Fox owns so many great villains and cosmic characters I would love to play around with including Annihilus — and I think they own Kang.”

In case you’re not familiar with the characters Gunn is referencing, here’s a bit of background.

Kang

Kang, pictured above, is primarily known as one of the Avengers’ greatest foes, but the time-traveling conqueror in the purple mask is also multiple villains in one. Kang’s future/alternate self is known as Immortus, while his past self used the Rama-Tut persona. It’s puzzling that the rights to Kang are tied up in the Fantastic Four films. Perhaps it’s because Rama-Tut appeared in Fantastic Four before Kang debuted in The Avengers. Kang is also supposedly a distant relative of Reed Richards, the leader of the Fantastic Four.

Annihilus

Annihilus was primarily a Fantastic Four villain, so his inclusion with the Fantastic Four rights is no surprise. Annihilus was the evil ruler of the Negative Zone for decades before he got a major upgrade in the Annihilation event. After that, Annihilus was transformed into a cosmic level threat to the entire Marvel Universe.

Both Kang and Annihilus would make excellent villains for Marvel’s future films, if Fox and Marvel Studios were to ever come to an agreement about the Fantastic Four. It’s not impossible, as Sony and Marvel set the template for a deal with their agreement for the Spider-Man: Homecoming film and Spidey’s appearance in Captain America: Civil War. But it doesn’t appear to be in the cards for the Fantastic Four any time soon. Perhaps that will change when the Fantastic Four film rights begin to run out again.
