Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats returned to Broadway in August. It still has “The Moments of Happiness” and a “Memory,” but the performance on September 30 will have an extra special touch: an actual cat. I’m sure you’re thinking to yourself, “But cats are unpredictable and you can’t guarantee they’ll hit their marks and meow on key.” And you would be correct. This is the first time an actual cat is appearing in Cats. The Wrap says the musical’s producers haven’t chosen any pedestrian feline for the occasion; the cameo belongs to internet sensation Grumpy Cat.
The cat with the perma-grouchy face started the internet cat celebrity trend. Yes, that’s a thing. If you don’t believe me, spend some time searching for “internet famous cats” and see for yourself. Grumpy Cat appears on merchandise and does meet and greets with photo ops at various conventions. She currently has almost two million followers on Instagram. That’s all rather impressive for a cat, and I can only imagine what this Broadway credit will do for her ego.
Though technically, Grumpy Cat’s not performing. She’s going to make a cameo during the curtain call. That seems safer. After all, no one wants to see Rum Tum Tugger accidentally kick Grumpy Cat during a dance. She’s taking the news in stride. She gave her handlers the following statement: “Being selected as the first real cat to perform in Cats on Broadway is an honor. I hate it. If Iâm really being honest, Iâd prefer to play the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera.” I mean, I’d watch that.
Do you think this will start a trend of more internet famous felines stopping by Cats? Who would you cast? Tell me in the comments.
