“Groove Is in the Heart” in New SING Holiday Music Video, and More Movie News

Chances are you could use a great big heaping dollop of holiday spirit right about now, no matter how far away Thanksgiving might be. So we’re kicking off today’s Movie Morsels with a great big burst of Yuletide joy courtesy of the cast of crazy critters in Illumination’s Sing. Also today, we have the latest looks at Logan and Transformers: The Last Knight, and much more for your mirth and merriment…

Sing

While pigs can’t fly, they can, apparently, ice skate with the best of them, as Nick Kroll’s playful German piggy Gunter demonstrates when he gets one helluva holiday party started in a new music video/promo for Illumination’s Sing. Hitting theaters on December 21st, the film finds all sorts of crooning critters competing in a contest organized by Matthew McConaughey’s koala showman protagonist Buster Moon, in a last-ditch effort to save his failing theater from closing down…

Logan

The Instagram feed for Hugh Jackman’s final Wolverine film Logan has become a veritable bottomless box of puzzle pieces. What with a steady supply of artful black-and-white photos released over the course of the last month. The latest such image? A close-up shot of the cybernetic hand belonging to Reaver leader Donald Pierce, who first menaced the movie’s titular Canadian mutant way back in April 1980’s Uncanny X-Men #132 (when Pierce was a member of the Hellfire Club). In Logan, he’ll be played by Gone Girl and Narcos star Boyd Holbrook. So let’s give the boy a hand!

In case you missed it, here are a couple of other recent shiny pics from Logan. Though your guess is as good as mine as to what role these locations play in the film…

Fullmetal Alchemist

We recently got our first look at the full trailer for the Ghost in the Shell movie starring Scarlett Johansson. But there’s another live-action adaptation of an anime and manga almost as beloved on its way to the big screen, and this one is made up entirely of Japanese actors. Warner Bros. Japan has just released the first trailer for Fullmetal Alchemist, set, like its source material, in Europe. Directed by Fumihiko Sori, the film centers on two brothers, Ed and Al, who try to bring their deceased mother back to life via the pseudoscience of alchemy, and instead wind up paying a terrible price…

Transformers: The Last Knight

Say what you want about Michael Bay, the guy knows how to shoot a movie like few working directors. Of course that’s made easier when you’re shooting with state-of-the-art 3D IMAX cameras. The following video is a tribute to Bay’s longstanding partnership with IMAX, but it also gives us a brief behind-the-scenes look at his next and final Transformers movie, with new footage of Josh Duhamel and his fellow marines, as well as Sir Anthony Hopkins by Stonehenge—a fitting location for a film titled The Last Knight

Bone

bone-02FEATURED

Finally today… Jeff Smith’s comedic fantasy epic Bone was one of the most beloved comic book of the 1990s, ranking alongside Sandman and Preacher, as well as an indie publishing phenomenon. Since Bone is so heavily influenced by the cartoons of Chuck Jones and the Donald Duck stories of Carl Barks, it’s only natural that there’s been talk of an animated film adaptation for decades. Well, color me taken aback! Because a writer-director is finally attached to the project in the form of Kung Fu Panda and The Little Prince filmmaker Mark Osborne.

Adam Kline is co-writing the film’s script with Osborne, who remarks to The Hollywood Reporter, “Bone is very special and unconventional because it blends elements together that you don’t necessarily expect — soft, little comic characters and epic high-stakes fantasy adventure. To carry this into the cinematic realm presents both an opportunity to represent what readers of all ages have loved about the series, while pushing animated storytelling into exciting and different areas.” Amen, brother!
