Grand Admiral Thrawn Returns to the STAR WARS Canon

With Disney’s takeover of Lucasfilm, one of the biggest changes to the franchise was the de-canonization of most of the Star Wars Expanded Universe. Moments like Chewbacca’s death and characters like Anakin Solo were all dumped in favor of a clean slate. However, according to the guys over at Making Star Wars, it looks like one EU favorite may be returning to the fold. As part of season three of Star Wars Rebels, the team behind the cartoon is looking to re-introduce Grand Admiral Thrawn — the main villain at the core of Timothy Zahn’s series of books known as The Thrawn Trilogy.

One of the most popular characters in the Expanded Universe, he was known for his distinct blue skin and red eyes, and was one of the Empire’s most brilliant tacticians. He managed to take control of the Imperial Fleet following their defeat at Endor. Now if this is all true, it could open the door to other EU characters! (We’re lookin’ at you, Mara Jade.)

Join guest host Matt Mira as we discuss why it’s such a big deal Thrawn is back in the official Star Wars canon, on today’s Nerdist News.
