GOTHAM Introduces Oswald Cobblepot’s New Dad, Paul Reubens (Exclusive)

Has Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) finally found a home on Gotham … or has he just walked into a new nightmare?

After the Penguin was caught by the GCPD, he took the blame for Theo Galavan’s (James Frain) death—even though it was really Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) who pulled the trigger, ending the corrupt mayor’s life—and had his mind brainwashed by Hugo Strange (B.D. Wong) in Arkham Asylum. Against all odds, however, he made it through the torturous experiments and came out of it a much kinder, gentler man. The Penguin was gone, and Oswald Cobblepot was officially declared “sane” and released back into the world.

Oswald’s first stop in his freedom tour, his mother’s grave, led him to an accidental meeting with his father. The two men never knew the other existed, so it was a very happy reunion. Elijah Van Dahl (Paul Reubens) immediately welcomed Oswald into his life and home with open arms … but his wife Grace (Melinda Clarke) wasn’t so happy about this new family member, and neither were her two children.

Nerdist has your exclusive first look at next week’s episode of Gotham, “Prisoners,” in which Oswald learns that everything might not be as picture perfect as it seems when he first moves in to the Van Dahl estate.

“Oswald and his father become close almost immediately, and so Oswald, having just been cast out from his previous life, now finds out that he has a new life,” Taylor says. “And as things go with Oswald Cobblepot, when it’s up, it’s probably not going to stay there for too long. His step-family has some horrible plans in store for him.”

But despite the ominous times ahead for Oswald, it’s going to be a real treat to see Reubens and Clarke play his bizarre new parents.

“I’m really excited for people to see that Paul is so much more than the character he’s best known for,” Taylor says. “He is an incredibly committed actor.”

Executive producer John Stephens still can’t get over how perfect the casting was for Reubens to play Taylor’s onscreen father.

“They really look like father and son, don’t they?” Stephens says to Nerdist. “It was almost too perfect. We love what he’s doing on the show.”
