Funko POP! continues their great expansion into all possible pop culture properties, and their latest foray has them landing in Fox’s Gotham. The series has mostly been a critical success and has found a decent footing among fans as well. There have been a few missteps, (the name Ivy Pepper? C’mon) but overall it’s an enjoyable and fresh look at the life of a young Bruce Wayne and the burgeoning criminal underbelly of the city he calls home.

As the Funko POP! figures demonstrate, the series has managed to strike a visually unique tone in a world filled with various iterations of Batman stories. As the bobble-inspired sculpts are fairly sparse (two eyes and a nose), a character without a distinct look or outfit might fall flat. But Fish Mooney is immediately recognizable to anyone who has seen the Gotham-original character, as are Oswald Cobblepot and the young Selina Kyle. Bruce and Jim Gordon are very faithful to their onscreen counterparts, and when paired with the others, are unmistakable in their identity. The same goes for Harvey Bullock; when with the group, he’s immediately identifiable. Set the figure aside and ask someone who has never seen the show to identify him, though, and the person might guess it’s Harvey … Keitel.

I may be slightly biased in that assessment because my Harvey will always be the Batman: The Animated Series Harvey, that irascible animated detective with a serious case of Bat-disgust.

With this first Funko POP! wave leaving out the military-trained Alfred, Edward Nygma, and a certain red-head who is surely going to become the Joker, I’d say it’s a safe bet to expect more POP! from Gotham. The full lineup of this wave include Robin Lord Taylor’s excellent rendition of Oswald Cobblepot, Jada Pinkett Smith’s Fish Mooney, the tween-ified Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle, Donal Louge’s Harvey Bullock, and Ben McKenzie’s fresh-faced Jim Gordon.
