BD Wong’s reign of terror on Hollywood continues with Gotham!
The Jurassic Park and Jurassic World baddie has just been cast as the nefarious supervillain Dr. Hugo Strange on Fox’s DC Comics drama, Nerdist has confirmed. The role is recurring.
Gotham‘s version of Hugo Strange is described as a brilliant psychiatrist hired to run Gothamâs infamous Arkham Asylum. Strangeâs devotion to rehabilitating Gothamâs most notorious villains makes him appear altruistic, but he harbors a dark secret.
Strange will soon reveal himself to be one of Gothamâs greatest threats: a man whose obsession with pushing the limits of the human mind and body has translated into secretly conducting horrifying experiments for Indian Hill, Wayne Enterprises’ black-ops program dedicated to creating the ultimate super human… or supervillain. Indian Hill was first introduced in this week’s episode, “Rise of the Villains: By Fire,” when the first-ever female Firefly, Bridgit Pike (Michelle Veintimilla), was sent to the secret underground lab for testing after her fireproof suit melted to her skin. And the lab was something straight out of our nightmares.
Wong is best known for playing the smart and strategic (yet totally evil) scientist Dr. Henry Wu in the Jurassic Park franchise, as well as appearing in 11 seasons of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. He has also appeared on Mr. Robot, Awake, and Oz.
But that’s not the only exciting piece of Gotham casting news: Nerdist has also confirmed that Being Human and Masters of Sex alum Kristen Hager has also joined the Fox drama as Nora Fries.
Nora is the terminally ill wife of DC supervillain Victor Fries, aka Mr. Freeze (played by House of Cards alum Nathan Darrow). Thanks to her smarts, sincerity and a lighthearted sensibility, sheâs the only person whoâs managed to connect with the otherwise emotionally cold cryogenicist. As her condition worsens and her husband becomes more desperate to save her life, Nora must make the ultimate choice: play the willing participant in Victorâs mad plan or sacrifice herself to stop the monster inside of him.
And because, according to Fox, Victor Fries’ “harrowing journey” to help his wife “leads to his transformation into the legendary DC villain Mr. Freeze,” it’s safe to assume that everything won’t go according to plan. The saga of Nora and Victor will begin in the November 30 episode of Gotham and will continue for at least three episodes.
Best known for her role on Being Human, Hager is also the lead role in David Zabel’s pilot, The Adversaries, opposite Terry O’Quinn and Christine Lahti. She is also the lead in Michelle Ashford’s TNT pilot, The Cocaine Project and has a recurring role on the upcoming SyFy series The Expanse, which premieres this December.
Gotham executive producer Bruno Heller previously told Nerdist he was excited about introducing the Indian Hill mythology on the show.
“Something we’re going to see this year is the underbelly of Wayne Enterprises, the Indian Hill bioengineering laboratory, the subterranean aspects of Wayne Enterprises,” Heller said. “When we go there and see what they’re doing down there, we’re going to be introducing the great Dr. Hugo Strange and Mr. Freeze.”
Heller knew that saving that storyline for season two was the right choice.
“The subtitle of this season is ‘Rise of the Villains’ and I’m so excited to roll out those big baddies,” Heller said. “We’ve got some great ones coming up that is the nub of what makes the DC universe so great, those monsters and villains and the ever-increasing stakes they bring. I’m so excited about what we’re going to do.”
