Say what you will about this past year (or better yet, scream it into a therapy pillow) but it’s at the very least given us some outstanding new television and film. Though much of our attention has been honed in on a flourishing reboot culture, and for good reason—read: the terrific exploits that were Blade Runner 2049, Alien: Covenant, It, and Twin Peaks: The Return—we also got a bevy of brand new page-to-screen adaptations—namely Legion, Riverdale, and The Handmaid’s Tale—and even some original hits that are sure to cast their own longstanding shadow on the entertainment world. You can bet that horror fans will be talking about Get Out for years to come, as will high school movie junkies about Lady Bird.
But we can wax poetic about our favorite movies of the year any time we like; Monday morning hands the mic to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to name their picks.
