Later this year, fans in the U.S. will get the opportunity to see Godzilla Resurgence on the big screen, but Toho’s iconic giant monster will be back in theaters sooner than expected. Next year, Godzilla will star in a new feature-length anime film!

Via Variety, Toho announced that it is teaming up with Polygon Pictures on the Godzilla anime, which doesn’t currently have a subtitle. However, it does have two directors in place: Kobun Shizuno (Detective Conan) and Hiroyuki Seshita (Knights of Sidonia), and the script was written by Gen Urobuchi (Psycho-Pass: The Movie). No additional details about the film have been released, but there is a very striking piece of concept art that definitely caught our attention.

We’re not sure what it means, but it appears to depict three explorers standing beside their starship as they overlook a very lush and mysterious wilderness…and there’s no sign of Godzilla himself. It’s very mysterious, especially, and leads us to guess a lot about what kind of movie this would be. Could it be that any of Godzilla’s extraterrestrial foes are heading to the anime as well? There have been a few Godzilla animated series in both America and Japan, but this new project from Toho and Polygon Pictures appears to have a more serious take on the franchise than some of the previous adaptations. Considering that the film is coming out in 2017, we should have more details in the near future.
