GODZILLA: RESURGENCE Has a North America Release Date!

Godzilla fans in North America have been foaming at the mouth waiting for news as to when we’d finally be able to see Toho’s Shin Godzilla, a.k.a. Godzilla: Resurgence. Well, we can finally sleep easy, because Funimation is bring the King of Monsters to our shores this October! That’s right, October 11th through 18th will be a week of celebration and praise. No more sleepless nights, no more frantically refreshing the websites of local movie theaters. Godzilla is coming and we are so, so freaking excited.

Shin Godzilla opened in Japan to big business over the summer. In addition to a monster-sized box office, the movie also recieved heaps of critical acclaim. By all accounts, Shin Godzilla is great, and that has us even more hyped. We’re ready for the Kaiju mayhem!

Co-directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, Shin Godzilla is a a whole new take on history’s greatest monster. The story deals with Japan dealing with Godzilla for the first time, so despite what you made have read on the internet, this is not a sequel of any sort. I mean, you could probably just look at the new Godzilla design and tell that, but there have been some interesting theories floating around. Turns out they are all pretty much way off base; Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi have started fresh, which is not a bad thing. Sure, we’d all love a Godzilla: Final Wars sequel, but that’s just not in the cards. Who even knows what Don Frye is up to these days?!

Shin Godzilla is Toho Company, Ltd’s 29th Godzilla film, and their first since calling it quits in 2004 after the release of Godzilla: Final Wars. Funimation is handling the release in North America. The film was renamed Godzilla: Resurgence for its English language run, but Funimation is still calling it Shin Godzilla as of right now. Whatever you want to call it, Godzilla will be stomping through North American cinemas for one week in 2016 on October 11th through the 18th. That’s right, you only have one week to cram in as many viewings as possible, so clear your schedule! I have a newborn baby due that week, so it sucks for my wife and child. I mean, I want to be there for the birth and all, but Godzilla! Priorities, people.
