GODZILLA: PLANET OF THE MONSTERS Anime Film Sets Netflix Release in New Trailer

Godzilla is back and he’s bigger than ever in Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters (a.k.a. Godzilla: Kaiju Wakusei), his first anime feature film. And we’re not kidding about his size! Unlike previous incarnations of the iconic kaiju, this version of Godzilla has had 20,000 years to keep on growing in a world devoid of people. Now, the last of humanity has returned to take back their planet from Godzilla and the rest of the giant monsters. Unfortunately for them… well, they’re dealing with actual giant monsters here.

Now that Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters has left Japanese theaters, Netflix has set Wednesday, January 17 as the global release date for the film. Unlike the previous trailers, this one starts off with Godzilla’s iconic cry, and jumps right into the battle between Big G and the hopelessly outmatched humans who want to take back their home. The lead character, Haruo Sakaki, is particularly set on destroying Godzilla, because he witnessed the death of his parents during one of Godzilla’s rampages shortly before humanity fled for the stars. However, Sakaki’s quest for revenge may prove to be futile against this monster. More than ever before, Godzilla is a force of nature.

Starting in March, Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters will be adapted as manga serial in Shonen Jump, and the anime trilogy will also continue in Japan later this year with a sequel that reintroduces MechaGodzilla.
