Go Inside ORPHAN BLACK’s Ridiculously Campy Musical, ‘Blood Ties’

Last week’s episode of Orphan Black,”Mingling Its Own Nature With It,” saw the premiere of Alison Hendrix’s long-awaited Glendale Community Theater debut. After gaining the lead role in dearly departed Aynsley’s absence (whoops), the housewife iteration of Tatiana Maslany went out with a bang in the middle of Blood Ties, the campy and ridiculously on-the-nose musical that certainly didn’t help matters when it came to getting poor, addled Alison back on her feet. (In fact, you could say it had the opposite effect.)

The musical itself has been a topic of debate for fans of the show, a bit unsure as to whether or not the addition of such an absurd musical — complete with our leading lady’s need to cover up a dead body — was worth more of a chuckle or a groan from a storytelling perspective. On one hand, the coincidence is just too good to pass up when you take into consideration just how easily flustered our poor Alison Hendrix is. But on the other, was it more or less the series creators beating us (and Alison!) over the head with the fact that she kinda-sorta indirectly — but also sort of directly — killed her best friend/alleged-but-not monitor Aynsley?

First, have a look at the scene itself if you like to relive things like people seriously hurting themselves:

Then, take a look at the behind-the-scenes look at how and why Blood Ties came to be:

And just for funsies, we’ve also got the official poster for the show. No doubt a keepsake, as Alison Hendrix’s star is only going to get bigger and brighter from here:

But what do you think, Clone Clubbers? Did you like or hate the musical’s central themes as it related to Alison’s larger storyline? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

  1. I really like the idea and the realisation of this musical thing… And it reflects Alison’s state of mind perfectly.
