G.I. JOE Goes to SIERRA MUERTE in a New Comic from Michel Fiffe (Exclusive Preview)

G.I Joe is a team that has always been ready to “fight for freedom, whenever there’s trouble,” but now, the freedom in question is freedom of expression for acclaimed indie comics creator Michel Fiffe (Copra). Nerdist can exclusively announce Fiffe will be writing, drawing, lettering, and coloring the new IDW Publishing miniseries G.I. Joe: Sierra Muerte, in which the core team goes rogue on a rescue mission, all while forces within Cobra try to thwart Cobra Commander, and Storm Shadow goes AWOL.

Fiffe’s personal favorite team members seem to be the ones most of us liked best: Snake Eyes, Roadblock, Lady Jaye, Scarlett, Rock ‘n Roll, Gung-Ho, Stalker, and Flint, while the bad guy roster looks to include Zartan and the Dreadnoks in addition to the obvious Cobra Commander, Baroness, Major Bludd, and Destro.

“Love and loss, combat and cunning, cheap laughs and high stakes – this is everything I want in a G.I. Joe comic,” said Fiffe, proving that he gets it. The Joes and Cobras may battle for the fate of the world, but it’s always a mistake to take them too seriously. We are in a world where an evil military force employs bikers obsessed with grape soda, after all.

We’re excited to present the first few pages of Fiffe’s tale, which will debut next spring. As you can see, the characters are instantly recognizable, but uniquely stylized in expressive fashion.

Anime motion lines! John Woo-style two-handed gun action! And of course it wouldn’t be G.I. Joe without ninjas in the military!

Yes, Baroness, a “fluke.” G.I. Joe showing up to stop your plans never ever happened before! Well, maybe. This could be a standalone in a reality where that actually doesn’t occur as a matter of course. Fiffe does say it’s all about putting his “own spin on this iconic franchise…I wanted to take all of my favorite players and give them a chance to shine in their own unique ways. By creating the entire package, I tap into the personalized core of this classic cast.”

Rock ‘n Roll’s so vain, he probably knows this cover’s about him.

Sierra Muerte will debut in spring 2019.
