GHOST IN THE SHELL Super Bowl Ad Reveals More of the Major

The Big Game isn’t happening until Sunday, but you don’t have to wait to see the new Ghost in the Shell Super Bowl ad. Paramount Pictures has released the new trailer a few days early, and it features one of the most unsettling moments that we’ve seen from the film to date.

Most of the included clips are from the previous trailers, including Scarlett Johansson‘s character, the Major, kicking some serious ass in her thermoptic suit and those incredibly disturbing robo-geishas. One of the new shots includes a look at the Major’s partner, Batou (Pilou Asbaek), and their support team. But the most noteworthy part of the trailer finds the Major in a bit of a bind as another cyborg removes part of her face.

Keep in mind, the Major has been told time and time again that her life was saved, which is one of the reasons why she dedicates her existence to saving others. In this scene, she’s confronted with two equally disturbing truths: the fact that her life may have been “stolen” rather than saved, and the uncomfortable notion that she may not be who she thought she was. If even the Major’s face is artificial, then there’s no telling what she really looked like before she became a cyborg. She can’t even trust her own reflection to tell her who or what she once was.

We’ll find out more when Ghost in the Shell hits theaters on Friday, March 31.
