Get Your First Look At X-MEN: APOCALYPSE’s Totally 80s Jean Grey & Jubilee

Although some photos leaked earlier this week from the set of X-Men: Apocalypse, director Bryan Singer has just released the first official photo, via his Instagram account, of Game of Throne’s Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, as well as newcomer Lana Condor as Jubilee. In case the picture didn’t give it away on first glance, the movie looks to be heavily embracing its 1980s aesthetic, with Sophie rocking some high waisted acid wash jeans and what looks to be a top with some shoulder padding going on (Molly Ringwald, eat your heart out!). Jubilee looks the most like her comic book counterpart, with a canary yellow jacket, hoop earrings, and those jean shorts. Other pics have shown her wearing Jubilee’s classic hot pink sunglasses, too. Like, totally bitchin’.

The set photos that leaked earlier this week show that the scene they were filming was at a mall, the hub of every teen’s social life in the ’80s (and, fittingly, where we first encounter the character of Jubilee in the comics and the ’90s animated series). In the other pictures, we see Kodi-Smit McPhee as young Nightcrawler, wearing a Michael Jackson Thriller style jacket, and Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, sporting what looks to be some “Members Only” clothes. The movie theater in the mall is also showing Return of the Jedi, as shown in pics from producer Simon Kinberg’s Twitter, clearly placing the movie smack-dab in 1983. All the little period details Bryan Singer is putting into this movie is certainly filling this child of the ’80s with nostalgic glee.

If you look carefully though, there are some SPOILERIFIC details in the leaked set pics; Nightcrawler seems comfortable walking around out in the open among normal humans without much of a fuss, and certain signs in the mall say “M-Day Sale.” Could the movie-verse “M-Day” be the day mutants were revealed to the world in this new timeline when Mystique saved the President in Days of Future Past? One thing’s for sure, history is decidedly different than the one we knew in the original X-Men trilogy. Check out a gallery of images from the set, and see if you can spot any more clues.
