Get a Sneak Peek of Guillermo del Toro’s Creepy Collection, “At Home With Monsters”

When you love an artist, it only makes sense to pour through their many inspirations, soaking up anything and everything that made them the painter, composer, director, writer they are today. And with filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, you can take it a giant step further, because he’s collected enough props, books, sketches, and other macabre trinkets to fill a house. Over the years, del Toro has gathered items that informed his artistic vision and displayed them thematically in his own house, which he affectionately calls “Bleak House.” And now, members of the public can view his wonderfully weird collection in “At Home With Monsters,” a new traveling exhibit that kicks off in Los Angeles at the Los Angeles Museum of Art (LACMA) today, August 1.

Curated by del Toro himself, “At Home With Monsters” is a labyrinthine look at the filmmaker’s childhood, muses, and most beloved treasures–plus props, models, and concept art from his own films. And this weekend, we were able to get a sneak peek at the exhibit before it opens. We wandered through the LACMA halls, stopping to fawn over full busts of Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft, secret scenes of Frankenstein and his bride, a giant sculpture of the Pale Man from Pan’s Labyrinth, original art from del Toro’s next adaptation, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, the gorgeous gowns of Crimson Peak, vintage horror magazines, tons of Hellboy props and much, much more.

Not only do we have a gallery of images from the exhibit for you to peruse below (which only touch the surface of this beautiful collection), we also did a Facebook Live walk-through of the space with our own Andrew Bowser (Bizarre States, “Weird Satanist Guy”).

Stay tuned later this week for our interview with the man himself, Guillermo del Toro, and a more detailed look at “At Home With Monsters” — right here on Nerdist!

Make sure to check out the LACMA official website for more details on tickets, dates, and more.
