There may not be a more famous Marvel Comics fan than international best-selling author and A Song of Ice and Fire creator, George R.R. Martin. He was one of the original members of the Merry Marvel Marching Society. And more than once, Martin has voiced his desire to write a Doctor Strange comic if Marvel agrees to never undo anything that he puts in the story.

While sharing his thoughts on the recently released Ant-Man film, Martin revealed that he has a “problem” with both Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Namely, the overabundance of characters.

“A superhero movie needs a fair share of smashing and bashing and stuff blowing up, of course,” wrote Martin. “But IMNSHO that stuff works best when it is happening to people we actually know and care about, and if you jam in too many characters and don’t take time to develop any of them properly, well…”

Perhaps that’s why Martin is so hard on the Stark family in the A Song of Ice and Fire novels! But in all fairness, Martin does tend to develop his characters and make us love them before subjecting them to horrible, horrible death and destruction.

Martin actually enjoyed Ant-Man, but he wanted to see more of the original Wasp, Janet van Dyne. Martin also spoke out against Marvel Studios’ tendency to pits its cinematic heroes against their exact opposites.

“I am tired of this Marvel movie trope where the bad guy has the same powers as the hero,” wrote Martin. “The Hulk fought the Abomination, who is just a bad Hulk. Spider-Man fights Venom, who is just a bad Spider-Man. Iron Man fights Ironmonger, a bad Iron Man. Yawn. I want more films where the hero and the villain have wildly different powers. That makes the action much more interesting.”
