George Lucas on ‘Breaking Up’ with the STAR WARS Movies

For the more nerdy among us—which, to be fair, is the majority of you good folks reading this site—you’re likely well aware George Lucas wasn’t going to be involved in the making of the new Star Wars films once Disney bought Lucasfilm three years ago. But for some, they might be wondering just why Lucas, the man who created this whole thing, wasn’t asked back to direct them.

Luckily, CBS had Charlie Rose ask Lucas himself just why he wasn’t going to be involved during an interview on CBS This Morning. Although Lucas originally gave Disney a story treatment for Episodes VII-IX, which would deal with the “family soap opera”of the Skywalker clan, Disney politely said “no thanks” and went in their own direction. (Does that mean none of the younger characters are related to Anakin Skywalker in The Force Awakens?? I somehow doubt that.)

With that in mind, Lucas decided to do the smart thing and divorce himself from the whole situation, telling Charlie Rose the following sage advice:

“When you break up with somebody, the first rule is no phone calls. The second rule, you don’t go over to their house and drive by to see what they’re doing. The third one is you don’t show up at their coffee shop and say you are going to burn it… You just say ‘Nope, gone, history, I’m moving forward.'”

That’s some Yoda like wisdom, Mr. Lucas. One of the main themes of the Star Wars prequels was the need to let go, and it appears that Lucas has taken his own advice and done so.  Better for him, and probably better for us. For more of his interview with Charlie Rose, you can watch the video above.
