Geoff Johns Brings STARGIRL Live-Action Series to DC Universe

Earlier this summer, Geoff Johns resigned as DC’s Chief Creative Officer to focus on writing and producing comics and films. Johns has now added DC Universe’s new Stargirl live-action series to his lineup of projects.

Johns made the announcement at his spotlight panel on the first day of San Diego Comic-Con. The new Stargirl series will focus on Courtney Whitmore, the character Johns co-created in memory of his late sister. In DC’s comic-book realm, Courtney was the step-daughter of the original Star-Spangled Kid, who took over his codename when she discovered his crime-fighting tools. She later became Stargirl after receiving the Cosmic Rod from Jack Knight, the previous Starman.

According to DC Universe, the new Stargirl series will follow Courtney in high school as she teams up with the Justice Society to fight new and classic villains. Stargirl made her live-action debut in a two-part episode of Smallville which was also written by Johns. If Stargirl shares continuity with the other DC Universe shows, it suggests that future crossovers with Titans, Doom Patrol, and Swamp Thing are possible. We wouldn’t be too shocked if a Justice Society series ends up on the docket as well, pending the response to this show.

Arrowverse super producer Greg Berlanti will executive produce the new Stargirl series alongside Johns. The 13-episode first season will premiere on DC Universe in 2019.
