Fans of skulking about heavily guarded military complexes in cardboard boxes rejoice! During his GDC talk entitled “Photorealism Through the Eyes of a FOX: The Core of Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes,” Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima revealed that Kojima Productions’ mystery project The Phantom Pain is none other than the subtitle for Metal Gear Solid V.  First teased at Spike’s VGA Awards last year, The Phantom Pain has been keeping the rumor mill working overtime for quite some time now, and though this news may have been somewhat expected, it’s still pretty damn exciting to hear, especially from Kojima himself. In the words of a Genome Soldier, “!”.
While hearing a speech about the intricacies of the FOX engine’s graphical capabilities and how Marvelous Designer renders photorealistic cloth is interesting, why not just watch a trailer of the game in action. Prepare to shed a single tear because we’re approaching some seriously beautiful Uncanny Valley territory.
Holy cow, right? Did you notice the backing track by Garbage and Kiefer Sutherland’s dulcet tones? And how about that hook for a hand? Suddenly, all this Phantom Pain talk is adding up. And a nine year coma? Didn’t it look like Revolver Ocelot was carrying Snake out of the hospital? This sounds like the work of the La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo. In all seriousness, this is one of the most impressive graphical achievements I’ve seen in a while. The level of photorealism here is insane and I, for one, cannot wait to see more of this game in action.

Whats with the flying flame horse? The Metal Gear series is starting to look more like Final Fantasy 7. The next metal gear is going to be Mako powered and you will have to defeat all three forms of the bad guy to win (with a tranquilizer gun if you want the good ending).
