Gaming Daily: Watch This Guy Tackle DARK SOULS with Only His Voice

Welcome back from the weekend, everybody! We hope you had a great time sitting at home, playing video games, eating junk, and hanging out with your friends and family. I spent my weekend getting caught up on Life is Strange, and boy am I ready for the grand finale. In the meantime, I’m here with your daily dose of Gaming News. In today’s Gaming Daily, some guy beat Dark Souls using only voice controls, Blizzard is working on a new Diablo project, Take-Two Interactive’s CEO explains why Mafia III isn’t like GTA V, New gameplay footage for Rise of the Tomb Raider was released, and Destiny developer explains why The Taken King costs so much.

Smough and Ornstein Dark Souls Voice

Somebody beat Dark Souls’ Smough and Ornstein using only his voice.

We’ve seen our fair share of both speed and trick runs alike for Dark Souls, but this recent feat by Reddit user GMABT--who’s also responsible for beating the game with Rock Band controllers and the Donkey Kong bongo set–clearly takes the cake. Using only voice controls, via the software VoiceAttack, Benjamin Gwin took on several of the title’s bosses and achieved sweet victory.

As you can see in the video at the top of the page, he was brave enough to tackle the iconic Smough and Ornstein battle every Souls fan raves about. Using commands like “strafe left”, “backward”, “combo” and etc., he successfully navigated around not one, but two characters. Those who’ve taken on the duo can appreciate just how amazing this feat is.

Though the video is less than 8 minutes long, Gwin explains that the fight was responsible for 111 out of 485 deaths on the run and took him a whopping 30 hours to complete. Now that’s dedication!

Diablo

Blizzard is working on a new Diablo Project.

We heard a lot from Bizzard during Gamescom last week, but it looks like the studio has more up their sleeves. According to a recent job listing, the company is looking for someone who demonstrates “proficiency with popular 2D and 3D applications, such as Maya, 3DS Max, Adobe Photoshop, Painter etc.” and “a passion for games with a deep understanding of the Diablo franchise.” Welp, it sounds like they’re in the midst of working on a new Diablo game!

According to Take-Two, Mafia 3 is “completely different” from GTA V

In the wake of Mafia III’s worldwide reveal trailer during Gamescom, publisher Take-Two interactive’s CEO Strauss Zelnick took to the web to address the obvious comparison between the 2K’s upcoming game and Rockstar’s hit GTA V during an earnings call today. He reveals that GTA is “not up for comparison” to other franchises, and that Mafia III is a “completely different experience.”

According to Zelnick, Mafia III is a “completely different experience.” He continued, “I wouldn’t compare it to anything else out there. The reveal was great, but it stands alone.”

In reference to both 2K Games and Rockstar being under Take-Two’s umbrella, he stated, “We’re blessed that we have two distinct labels at this company. We do not have a tech-sharing environment. We’re a very congenial company, but we don’t think that’s the best way to get the best out of our development folks. It’s not the way it works around here.”

Microsoft releases Rise of the Tomb Raider Gamescom demo

If there’s one thing that the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot was severely lacking, it was tombs. While many were left perplexed why Crystal Dynamics decided to take the “Tomb” out of Tomb Raider, it seems the developer has listened to complaints and put them back in. In the video above, which was originally shown off at Gamescom, we see Lara scaling walls on her way to a secret tomb and solving puzzles once within. We were already impressed with what we saw during E3, and this demo adds to that excitement. We can’t wait!

DESTINY TAKEN KING

Destiny Dev elaborates on The Taken King’s lofty price.

Destiny’s big fall expansion is coming next month, and it’s looking great so far. What isn’t so great is the $40 price tag attached to the project, especially since the game’s season pass didn’t include it in the package. In fact, the previous two expansions cost $20, which puts The Taken King at double The Dark Below and House of Wolves DLC. Bungie Community Manager Eric “Urk” Osborne elaborated on the pricing during a recent IGN podcast.

He notes: “You’ve got a full campaign, [and] I think people are going to enjoy the cinematics, the characters, the missions. We’re taking you to the Dreadnaught, to Phobos, up into colony ships. Nathan Fillion [Firefly, Halo 3: ODST] is talking to you, Lance Reddick [The Wire] is talking to you, it’s good stuff.”

He continued, “I don’t have any trouble saying that The Taken King is well more than twice as much content as the Dark Below. The story’s great, there’s seven Crucible multiplayer maps, there’s three brand-new Strikes, and they’re the best Strikes we’ve delivered to date… We’ve got the Dreadnaught, which is not just a big new destination to explore, it’s really deep and layered, there’s tons of little secrets and things you can collect… [and] riddles and clues and stories and quests and quest logs and more guns and more gear and exotics. We’ve got three revised Strikes that are existing [Destiny Year One] Strikes but with the Taken infused in them to change them up for the first time. We’ve got the [King’s Fall] Raid, we’ve got a bunch of stuff we aren’t talking about but will about our in-game content.”

The expansion launches September 15. Do you think the amount of content is worth the purchase? Or, do you think Destiny is so last year?
