After a fun-filled weekend, it’s time to take on a heaping helping of news. In today’s Gaming Daily, Minecraft gets the Unreal Engine 4 treatment, Fable Legends has been officially cancelled, The Division servers went online a day early, Blizzard confirms Overwatch‘s release date after leak surfaces, and Doom‘s reverse cover has been revealed.
Minecraft-like game gets Unreal Engine 4 treatment.
We’ve already seen the likes of Spyro, Goldeneye, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’s Kakariko Village, and even Pokémon in Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4, so it was only a matter of time before somebody tackled Mojang’s hit game, Minecraft. A man named John Alcatraz recently created and shared the gorgeous video on r/minecraft, and the results are stunning. Check it out for yourself in the YouTube player at the top of the page.
The project, however, didn’t start out as a Minecraft. Alcatraz explained:
“While itâs looking similar to Minecraft, my intention was not to create a game similar to Minecraft, but just to see how easy it is to make a voxel based game with good performance using Blueprints only in Unreal Engine 4. The Minecraft look then later came when I searched for textures, and actually the whole internet is filled with public domain texture packs for Minecraft. So it was the best way for me to get textures for a voxel based project, since I am no artist. And letâs be honest, it does not look bad like this, having the graphical power of UE4 combined with the pixel look of textures which were intended to be used in Minecraft.”
Alcatraz went into depth about the project over on the Unreal engine forum (linked below) and shared a download link for the demo in the video’s description.

Fable Legends cancelled, Lionhead Studios may shut down.
Well, this is certainly disappointing. We received word from Microsoft earlier today that Fable Legends is officially cancelled. As if that weren’t sad enough, it sounds like the developer behind the game, Lionhead Studios, might be shutting down. And on top of that, it sounds like Denmark-based developer, Press Play Studios, is facing the same fate. For more on this developing story, refer to our original report (linked below).

The Division servers go live a day earlier.
Last week, Ubisoft announced that The Division‘s servers wouldn’t be going live until its launch day on March 8. But, it looks like things didn’t go exactly according to planned as they went up earlier than expected. So, that means anybody who managed to get their hands on a physical copy of the game ahead of launch will be able to enjoy online play a day earlier.
During the same announcement last week, Ubisoft emphasized the fact that fans won’t be seeing reviews for the game on launch day, because of how late servers are going live. That said, stay tuned for our own review. We’ve really enjoyed the experiences we’ve had with it thus far, and can’t wait to see the rest of the game.

Overwatch release date confirmed alongside a new trailer.
If you’re as pumped for Overwatch as we are, I have some good news! Earlier today, Blizzard officially confirmed that the game will be hitting PC, PS4, and Xbox One on May 24. On top of that, the company also announced that fans who pre-order the title will have access to the open beta starting on May 3. For everyone else, the fun kicks off on May 5, and will continue until May 9. To learn a bit more about what you’ll be doing in the open beta, head on over to our full post (linked below).

Doom‘s reverse cover revealed.
After the folks at Bethesda and id Software revealed the cover of their upcoming Doom reboot (which launches on May 13) fans didn’t hesitate to express their feelings about it. Spoilers: not everyone was a fan with the boring design. Soon after, the company launched a poll on Twitter, asking fans which artwork they would like to see on the physical version’s reverse cover. Unsurprisingly, fans chose the one depicted above, over the one below.
If you’re familiar with the classic Doom games and their respective covers, you’ll understand why the epic first image won fans over. According to the poll’s data, 62,126 people voted, with an overwhelming 68% of voters choosing the winning image.
As avid Doom fans ourselves, we have to agree with what the rest of the community decided. Also, a side note: allowing fans to vote on the inside cover in the first place is a fun idea, and a great way to convince people to pick up the physical version–especially in the digital age.
