Gaming Daily: PS2 Classics Coming to PS4, Will Feature Trophy Support

Friday is here, which means you can finally play Xenoblade Chronicles X! (Read our full review of the game here). This weekend is also special because PSX kicks off tomorrow. The Nerdist team will be out and about bringing you the best coverage of the event, so make sure to say hello if you see us. Alright, now for the gaming news of the day. In today’s Gaming Daily, PS2 games are coming to the PS4 beginning tomorrow, a new Uncharted 4 trailer reveals a new character, Dark Souls III release date is confirmed, Telltale has a new Batman game, and Microsoft plans to release new Xbox 360 backwards compatible games every month.

E3 PRESS CONFERENCE - PS4-2x2

PS2 games are coming to the PS4 tomorrow.

As I mentioned above, PSX starts tomorrow. Many of us predicted that we’d be hearing more about PS2 games heading to the PS4, but it seems like Sony decided to release more information today, instead of waiting for tomorrow’s keynote. You’ll be able to purchase 8 PS2 favorites on the PS4 starting tomorrow, with more planned in the future. I’m incredibly excited to play these classics. In fact, the image above of our very own Malik Forté portrays my excitement levels pretty well. Here’s the short list of games and their prices:

  • Dark Cloud — $14.99
  • Grand Theft Auto III — $14.99
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City — $14.99
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas — $14.99
  • Rogue Galaxy — $14.99
  • The Mark of Kri — $14.99
  • Twisted Metal: Black — $9.99
  • War of the Monsters — $9.99

PSX attendees will be able to play the following titles on the show floor:

  • Dark Cloud
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  • PaRappa the Rapper 2 (coming soon)
  • Rogue Galaxy
  • The King of Fighters 2000 (coming soon)
  • The Mark of Kri
  • War of the Monsters

These games will actually be up-rendered to 1080p, and will even include a trophy list which was compiled in conjunction with the developers of said games. This PS2 emulation approach reminds me more of Nintendo’s Virtual Console, rather than the Xbox One backwards compatibility feature.

I wonder what other surprises Sony has for tomorrow since they thought this wasn’t important enough to announce during the keynote.

New Uncharted 4 trailer introduces a new character.

Just in case you haven’t been keeping up with our coverage, the Video Game Awards were last night. During the awards, Naughty Dog unveiled an Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End trailer, revealing a new character named Nadine Ross. We don’t know much about her yet, but we do know that she means business when her shoes come off. Watch the trailer above.

Dark Souls III release date confirmed.

Prepare to die… a lot. Bandai Namco has announced that the newest iteration in their Souls series (and possibly last) will release on April 12. A new trailer came along with the news. Peep it above.

Let me just say, this game looks bloody awesome. I know many are still trying to survive Bloodborne: The Old Hunters DLC, but at least we now know how long we have to wait for From Software’s next macabre adventure. The footage shown above looks excellent, and I’ll be happy if they end up implementing gameplay mechanics from Bloodborne.

Telltale Games announces new Batman game.

This team really does not rest. The developer announced that they will now be working on a Batman series. This sounds pretty rad, especially if it goes the noir route. Telltale knows how to weave great immersive narratives, and Gotham is riddled with plenty of great stories to be told. If this team can make a Minecraft story interesting, I have no doubt Batman will be great. Additionally, they also debuted a trailer for the Walking Dead mini-series, which focuses around Michonne’s story. Keep them coming, Telltale.

Microsoft-BC-11132015

Microsoft plans to release Xbox 360 backwards compatible games every month.

Backwards compatibility has been a big hit amongst gamers. Microsoft has already stuck to their promise of releasing 100 bc games, and it seems like the company is intent on continuously supporting the feature. Here’s a tweet from Mike Ybarra, Partner Director of Program Management.

This is wonderful news because many of the best titles from last-gen have yet to make the transition. Microsoft has played their cards well recently, and an attempt to bring more BC titles every month shows that the company is definitely taking a more consumer-friendly approach.

That’s it for this week, ladies & gents. Make sure to keep it here for all of your PSX coverage. Will you be attending Sony’s fan event? Will we be seeing you in San Francisco this weekend? Let us know in the comments below.
