Gaming Daily: PlayStation Japan Thinks Out of the Box with MGS V Advertisement

Another week has come and gone, and we’ve finally made it to another PAX Prime. The Seattle-based event kicked off this morning, and will allow attendees the chance to play tons of upcoming titles until Monday August 31. Since not everyone is lucky enough to attend, I’m here, as always to keep you informed and up to date on the latest gaming developments. In today’s Gaming Daily, Japan released an interesting trailer for Metal Gear Solid V, there’s a Borderlands film on the way, the Call of Duty: Black Ops III beta was the biggest in the PS4’s history, Shenmue III is reportedly affecting Dreamcast sales, and XCOM 2 was delayed.

This Japanese MGS V trailer is bizarre.

I’ve seen my fair share of odd trailers, but PlayStation Japan’s recent advertisement for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain–which launches next Tuesday–takes the cake. The folks behind the video clearly took Snake’s obsession with hiding in cardboard boxes to a whole other (matrimonial?) level.

Unfortunately, I don’t understand Japanese, so I can’t tell you what’s being said in the video. But, what I do know is that it seems to depict a young couple getting married, spending their life together, and that it somehow connects to Metal Gear Solid V. It shows bits of gameplay throughout the video, so there’s that.

I suppose I’ll spend the next few days leading up the game’s release wondering how they managed to fit in the boxes. That can’t be comfortable.

Borderlands

Lionsgate is making a Borderlands film.

Though some are skeptical about Borderlands getting its own film because A) video game films generally suck, and B) the film studio is probably just piggy-backing on the popularity of Mad Max: Fury Road, I’m willing to stay positive until we hear more about the project. Whatever boat you’re in, the truth of the matter is that it’s happening. Lionsgate has teamed up with Take-Two Interactive, Gearbox Software, and Producers Avi and Ari Arad, to bring the popular franchise to the big screen. Details are slim at the moment, but I’m hoping this, the Assassin’s Creed film we discussed yesterday, and Uncharted turn out to be good. It’s time for a change.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III beta was the biggest in PS4 history.

This next bit of news doesn’t come as a surprise: According to a post on the Activision blog, “millions of people” participated in the Call of Duty: Black Ops III multiplayer beta last week, making it the biggest beta in the PS4’s history. The title raked in the most downloads, gameplay sessions, and hours of gameplay seen on PlayStation’s current system.

“Our goal is to deliver the best Day One experience possible and this beta – along with the input from our passionate community of fans – has helped position us to do just that,” said Mark Lamia, studio head of Treyarch.

With a franchise as popular as COD, the numbers aren’t surprising. It’s also worth mentioning how well received the beta was. Sure, the stress test wasn’t without a few bugs, but the addition of the specialist classes seems to have been the refreshing change the series needed.

The game’s November 6, 2015 release date can’t get here soon enough.

Shenmue 3

Shenmue III announcement has impacted Dreamcast sales.

Ah, the Dreamcast. Who would have thought a current day game reveal would be moving consoles? According to reports around the web, indie shops have been selling more of the systems since Shenmue III’s shocking reveal. One retailer revealed to MVC that they were able to move a grand total of 20 in one week.

Retrobution Gaming employee David James-Turvey stated, “I’ve had more customers hyped about Shenmue III than Call of Duty.” He added, “All of a sudden, people are asking where they can play the original two Shenmue games. The announcement of Shenmue III really piqued everyone’s interest.” That’s a bold statement considering the popularity of Call of Duty.

XCOM 2 has been delayed.

Sorry, guys. If you were hoping to get your hands on XCOM 2 this fall, you’ll have to wait a bit longer. 2K Games and Firaxis revealed today that the PC exclusive wouldn’t be hitting shelves until February 5, 2016. I suppose a few months isn’t too bad.

“We’ve set a high bar for the sequel and the entire team has been working hard to make sure we deliver a great follow-up to Enemy Unknown,” the developer revealed on the game’s official site. “We just need a little more time to make it the best possible game.”

While the delay is unfortunate, they sound positive that it will make the game better in the long run. “With XCOM 2, we want to have more depth, more re-playability, and more investment in your soldiers and this extension will give us the time we need to deliver on our promise to you.
