Gaming Daily: Former BIOSHOCK Developers’ Horror Game Gets Funded

It was a bit of a slow news day today, but I guess that can be expected after the deluge of news we received the week of E3. Thankfully, we’re here to keep you informed and up to date, despite the gaming news drought. In today’s Gaming Daily, former developers who worked on Bioshock have finally reached their funding goal for their upcoming horror game Perception, Shigeru Miyamoto is reportedly not actively involved in the NX, there’s a PC mod that allows you to roam around as Catwoman, Joker etc in Batman: Arkham Knight and more.

Bioshock veterans’ horror game Perception has been funded, new gameplay videos revealed.

It was just last month that The Deep End Games–which is comprised of former Bioshock developers–announced their upcoming horror game Perception. If you remember, the game features a blind girl named Cassie who uses echolocation to explore a mansion. The idea was fascinating, and according to reports around the web, the designers have surpassed the $150,000 Kickstarter goal and are currently sitting at $168,041.

While the amount has been reached, according to the developers, they will continue to accept pledges through their official website. Extra funds will go towards stretch goals like virtual reality support at a whopping $340,000, and both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions at $350,000.

On reaching their goal, they stated, “We are completely overwhelmed, overjoyed, and humbled at the reception our game has received.” They continued, “This has been the most exciting, exhilarating month and we have you to thank.”

In addition to the brand new trailer (which you can check out at the top of the page), they also released another video (above) featuring a retro mode called “Mode 7”. For more on the title, head on over to the Deep End Games website, and keep Nerdist tabbed for future updates on the 2016 PC title.

Nintendo Comments on E3 Criticism

While many find Nintendo’s approach to E3 questionable–because let’s face it, this year’s Direct was severely lacking–Shigeru Miyamoto stated in a recent investor’s briefing that the criticism was understandable. After talking about Sony and Microsoft’s impressive (yet not playable) titles that are slated for launch far in the future, Miyamoto brought up Nintendo’s presence at E3 and remarked: “There were lots of video demos of those titles. Nintendo played them. They received high praise as living room game consoles,” he said. He continued, “This is what Nintendo’s booth looked like. It was different from other companies; everyone was smiling, having fun with games.”

Miyamoto

Miyamoto “not actively participating in making decisions” about the NX.

Speaking of Miyamoto, in a recent interview with Fortune, Shigeru Miyamoto opened up about the Wii U and his involvement (or lack thereof) in the Japanese giant’s upcoming hardware release, the NX. After hearing the odd bit of news the other day that Nintendo was keeping quiet about their project because they didn’t want the information in the hands of their competitors, this story keeps getting weirder and weirder.

He revealed, “I feel like people never really understood the concept behind Wii U and what we were trying to do,” he says. “I think the assumption is we were trying to create a game machine and a tablet and really what we were trying to do was create a game system that gave you tablet-like functionality for controlling that system and give you two screens that would allow different people in the living room to play in different ways. …. Unfortunately, because tablets, at the time, were adding more and more functionality and becoming more and more prominent, this system and this approach didn’t mesh well with the period in which we released it.”

While we all know how involved he was in the development of the Wii, it is interesting to hear that Miyamoto is actually taking a step back from involvement in the development of hardware. He stated, “I’ve pulled myself back out of some of the hardware section and I’m really focused on some of the software that I’m involved in—for example, the new Starfox game,” he says. “Of course I am observing and looking at the hardware, but I am not actively participating and making decisions.”

Interesting indeed.

EA and Visceral’s Upcoming Star Wars title is inspired by the Uncharted series, and Star Wars 1313.

Sure, we already reported this, but it’s worth mentioning again. According to Nolan North (famous for voicing Nathan Drake) Visceral’s upcoming Star Wars title was inspired by both the Uncharted series and Star Wars 1313. Considering the fact that Amy Hennig directed and wrote Uncharted 1-3 is now a major player at Visceral, this revelation makes a lot of sense.

He noted, “If you’re a big fan of Amy Hennig and her style of story, she’s gone to EA and is going to reboot a brand new Star Wars franchise in the style of Uncharted,” explained North. “I happen to know a lot about it and it’s going to be awesome.”

This PC mod allows you to trek across Gotham as Catwoman, Harley Quinn, Jokeer and more.

Sure, the PC launch of Batman: Arkham Knight was a complete mess, but I suppose taking advantage of the mod (which is already out) that allows you to explore Gotham as Red Hood, Nightwing, Azrael, Robin, Bruce Wayne, Catwoman, Harley Quinn and even GCPD Officer Owens in the game’s free roam mode, might be enough to soften the blow a little.

That’s right, in four easy steps–which can be found in the YouTube video’s description–you’ll be traversing the Dark Knight’s playground as one of 11 playable characters. Considering the fact that running around as Catwoman in Arkham City was something I wish was present in Rocksteady’s final title, this news couldn’t be cooler.

Hopefully once more of the game’s bugs are weeded out,  the game will re-launch on Steam and more people will be able to take advantage of the sweet mod.
