Gaming Daily: ASSASSIN’S CREED FILM Enters Production, Slated For 2016 Release

There’s nothing like a good ole Thursday full of Star Wars Battlefront rumors and gigantic ass lists of PlayStation games. But that’s just scratching the surface of what was a pretty busy day in the gaming world. Today’s Gaming Daily features some news on the upcoming Assassin’s Creed film, another leaked character from Mortal Kombat X, and this months NPD sales figures. Let’s get rolling!

AC

The Assassin’s Creed film has entered production.

Ubisoft’s upcoming Assassin’s Creed movie has entered production, as revealed by the company’s CEO Yves Guillemot during an earnings call earlier. The film is dated for theatrical release on December 21, 2016– which falls directly in the same window that the Star Wars spin-off is slated to release! Risky risky, Ubisoft.

“We have the pleasure to announce today that the green light has been given by New Regency, and the production has already started,” Guillemot stated. “This is a very important milestone for the project and for our team on Assassin’s Creed.”

The movie– which is being produced by 20th Century Fox and New Regency– will star Michael Fassbender as the man bearing the hood and hidden dagger. As of now, there’s been no other casting news divulged, though we do know that Scott Franks and Michael Leslie will both be taking writing reigns on the project. Now the only question is– will the movie bother with following the modern day storyline of Desmond Miles and company? The most recent games seem to have gone in a completely different direction, so it’ll be interesting to see how the series is adapted to big screen with its complex timeline.

Sonya Blade confirmed for Mortal Kombat X>?

We sniffed out last week that Jax would be making a return to the Mortal Kombat arena. But many, like myself, were under the impression that Mr. Briggs’ former partner Sonya Blade would be absent for this installment– especially with her child and successor, Cassie Cage, being thrown into the roster. But a close analysis of the game’s trailers on a worldwide scale may have proven otherwise. Check this out:

The picture above is a screen from the “factions” video of last week, with each faction showing off a different fighter as its “leader.” The Special Forces faction puts Cassie Cage at the helm here, but the same screen in the Brazilian version of this video reveals something a little different:

I don’t think there’s much else to say except “welcome home,” Sonya. We’ll be standing by for all of the other character reveals leading up to the April 15!

PS4

PlayStation 4 tops the January NPD charts.

The Xbox One enjoyed two months on top of the NPD charts, thanks to their price slashing over the holiday. But were they able to remain there for the month of January? According to this months NPD sales figures, the PlayStation 4 has relinquished its spot on top of the hardware charts.

Though this may be disappointing news for Microsoft, it’s worth pointing out that the Xbox One spent a week of January back at its $400 price point, before Microsoft slashed the price of the console indefinitely. So with the Xbox One back down at the advantageous price of $350, it wouldn’t be a surprise if things shifted back in Mircosoft’s favor.

Additionally, Dying Light was the highest selling game of January, with software seeing a 200% increase in the US overall. Here’s a look at the top ten games on the software front last month:

1) Dying Light (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
2) Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3, PC)
3) Grand Theft Auto 5 (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3)
4) Minecraft (360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4)
5) NBA 2K15 (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3, PC)
6) Super Smash Bros. (Wii U, 3DS)
7) Far Cry 4 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, PC)
8) Madden NFL 15 (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3)
9) Destiny (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3)
10) FIFA 15 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, Wii, Vita, 3DS)
