GAME OF THRONES’ Season Finale Looks Like It’s Headed for the Dragonpit

Warning: This post contains major spoilers for Sunday night’s Game of Thrones, as well as a discussion of the preview for next week’s season finale.

They say time heals all wounds, but we’re going to need to live as long as the Three-eyed Raven if we’re ever going to recover from seeing Viserion brought down by the Night King’s ice javelin. But since time marches on like the White Walker army, we have to turn our focus to the future, and the preview for next week’s season seven finale of Game of Thrones gives us some idea of what we can expect, including our first visit to a infamous and symbolic spot in King’s Landing.

The majority of the preview focuses on a huge meeting of the major (living) players still left on the show; it looks as though Jon, Tyrion, and the rest of their allies will meet with Cersei and Jaime in King’s Landing, per a shot of Tyrion looking at the Red Keep where Euron’s ships are docked.

It isn’t confirmed, but that meeting looks like it will take place in the notorious Dragonpit.

It might seem like it could be the ruins of the Sept of Baelor, but the main floor in the Sept was a circle, and this is an oval. Hence our thoughts leaning toward the Dragonpit, the place on Rhaenys’ hill in King’s Landing where the Targaryens used to keep their dragons locked up. During the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons it suffered a lot of damage (including from dragonflame), and years later it was used to burn bodies with wildfire during a citywide plague. The Dragonpit is just a ruin now, though this looks to be in even worse shape than how it is described in the books.

We know Cersei has some sort of trap planned for Daenerys, and there is a symbolic reason to try and kill the last Targaryen at that spot. That’s because the Dragonpit might have been at least partially responsible for the extinction of dragons in the first place. Dragons will grow their entire lives if given freedom, but they seem to stop growing when they are confined. They got smaller and smaller the longer the Targaryens locked them in the Dragonpit, and the last dragon before Daenerys brought them back to the world was the size of a cat when it died.

Everyone will know what that place represents–the death of dragons. It is a place so steeped in meaning there’s a chance that by choosing the Dragonpit as the meeting place Cersei is giving away her ultimate motives for hosting her enemies.

Why hold it there then? She has nothing left but the legacy she leaves behind, so what better way to cement it than by ridding the world of dragons forever right there at the Dragonpit? Of course, Tyrion knows his sister has a plan, which might explain why Daenerys isn’t seen at this meeting. A late arriving dragon might be the last to show up, but the most important.

We also see in this preview the detente between the two armies, with the Unsullied and Dothraki standing outside a castle where Bronn and Jaime are. Whatever Cersei’s plan, it better work, because if she betrays the temporary peace and fails she likely won’t survive Daenerys’ superior forces. Here Jaime can see how true that is, one less dragon or not.

Is that why Jaime might stop Cersei for good if it looks like she’ll destroy them all?

The rest of the preview focuses on Sansa, last seen scheming against her own sister (that’s why she sent Brienne away). While everything about their interactions Sunday night was worrisome, we’re hopeful. In a trailer that released before the season started, Sansa was heard talking about how the lone wolf doesn’t survive, and we have yet to hear her say that this season.

“When the snows fall, and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives.”

Why would someone questioning if she can trust her sister say that unless she was reminding herself that she is stronger as a member of the pack than she is apart from it?

It is worth noting that there are a few things we don’t see here. As such, here are a few questions that linger after this video:

  • The Hound was headed back with the captured wight. Can it survive that far from the Wall and be the proof Cersei needs to join the real fight?
  • What will happen if the two Clegane brothers meet in King’s Landing?
  • Where is Sam headed?
  • Baelish is nowhere to be found, but we know his scheme is threatening House Stark. What’s his next move?
  • What is the Night King doing with his new dragon? And what kind of damage can a wight dragon do?

Lots of questions will be answered next week, but we doubt seven days will be enough time for us to figure out how to get over Viserion’s death.

What do you think will happen in the finale? Tell us in the comments below.
