Hear ye, hear ye, citizens of Westeros: your favorite television programme — I believe it is called the Game of Thrones — has been renewed for not one but TWO seasons, meaning we’ll be hearing more of the song of ice and fire for a fifth and sixth season. A more honest renewal story would’ve said “for as many seasons as David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will make it,” but we’ll take what we can get. All men must die, but not today, death. Not today.

In a press release sent out by HBO today — a mere 2 days after its season four premiere — the network stated the obvious: “Game of Thrones is a phenomenon like no other. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, along with their talented collaborators, continue to surpass themselves, and we look forward to more of their dazzling storytelling,” said president of HBO programming, Michael Lombardo. Good news for all you fantasy fantasy leaguers out there, eh?

The move is of the “no duh” variety, especially considering the critical praise for season four that accompanies its seriously impressive ratings. “Two Swords” was watched by an average of 6.6 million viewers in its premiere slot (picking up another 2 million in its later rebroadcast), making it HBO’s most-watched program since the 2007 finale of The Sopranos, which pulled in 11.9 million viewers. Now if you’ll excuse us, we’re off to find a singer appropriate enough to mark this momentous occasion in song — and don’t worry, it’ll be a hell of a lot more cheery than “The Rains of Castamere.”
