First GAME OF THRONES Prequel Spin-off Won’t Air Until at Least 2020

We’re still coming to grips with the fact HBO is making us wait until 2019 for the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones, but we’d rather them get the endgame right, even if the delay will feel less like a year than an eternity. Helping us deal with the delay is knowing we’re almost all but guaranteed to get another story from Westeros, via a prequel spin-off. But don’t count on a double dip into the Seven Kingdoms next year, because any new series won’t air until at least 2020.

This week, HBO’s President of Programming Casey Bloys spoke to The Hollywood Reporter at the Television Critics Association in Pasedena, and he confirmed they are still developing the five potential prequel spin-off ideas we told you about in May. While there’s still no word on what story a new show will explore (we have some ideas!), or how many of the ideas under consideration will make it to the screen, he did reveal when any of them would air.

“If we do a pilot and series, nothing is going to air on HBO until at least a year after the final season,” Bloys told The Hollywood Reporter. “We’re not doing a final season and then, ‘Following it at 11 p.m.—.'”

We don’t know yet when exactly Game of Thrones will premiere in 2019 (until season seven’s summer release, the show normally aired in spring), so we are likely more than two years away from a spin-off. Just like with season eight, we’re willing to wait, but we don’t like it.

What story do you hope to see told in a spin-off? Swear it to the old gods and the new in our comments below.
