Here’s How GAME OF THRONES Made the Loot Train Attack So Fiery (Exclusive)

Editor’s Note: this post contains spoilers from season 7 of Game of Thrones — don’t say we didn’t warn ya! (‘Cuz we did. Just now.)

For as much as there is to obsess over during Game of Thrones season, the show’s increasingly impressive production scale has also given us plenty to admire as we wait (for-ev-er) for season eight. And that goes double for the effects, both practically done and otherwise, that have brought the series’ increasingly awe-inspiring dragon battles to life. So in the fourth episode of HBO’s The Game Revealed, director Matt Shankman and some of the crew discuss the high level of technicality it took to pull off the massive battle sequence between the Targaryen and Lannister forces.

But don’t just take our word for it — check out our exclusive clip from the new episode right here, right now:

Needless to say, we’re totally getting a fire-spewing spider drone for Kyle Hill for his birthday.

The episode also gives you a behind-the-scenes look at Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner’s antics on set, delves into the Brienne/Arya sparring sequence with stunt coordinator Rowley Irlam, details the revamp of Winterfell in a post-Bolton world and explains how production designer Deborah Riley created the Dragonstone caves. The piece provides a 360-degree look at “The Spoils of War,” featuring interviews with cast members Kit Harington (Jon Snow), Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), and Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth), plus commentary throughout by episode director Matt Shakman and other crew.
