GAME OF THRONES’ Final Season Directors Announced

Editor’s Note: because this is a Game of Thrones post, we feel compelled to let you know there may be potential spoilers for the past seven seasons in the story below. Don’t say we didn’t warn you! (Also: why are you clicking on Game of Thrones stories if you aren’t caught up?)

And then there was one. Season, we mean. Of Game of Thrones. After a thrilling—if whiplashy—seventh installment of TV’s A Song of Ice and Fire story, the endgame is finally upon us. At long last we’ll have the answers to the questions that plague us: is Bran the Night King? Is he all Brans in history? Will Jaime kill Cersei? Is Varys truly a merman? Will Jon Snow kill Dany? Will Gendry and Arya fall in love? And who, if anyone, will end up on the Iron Throne?

Well, we may not know the answers yet, but we DO know who will unveil them for us when the time comes. On Tuesday, HBO announced that Miguel Sapochnik, David Nutter, and creators and showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss would be directing the final six episodes of the series. Likely taking two episodes apiece (as is traditionally how it works in Thronesland), Benioff and Weiss will reportedly direct the series finale (per The Hollywood Reporter).

It’s a very logical list, all things considered—even if we’re still longing for the days of Michelle MacLaren, the ONLY woman to ever direct on the series, last seen in 2014’s “First of His Name.” (She also directed “Oathkeeper, “Second Sons,” and “The Bear and the Maiden Fair.”)

But enough about memory lane. The men tasked with ushering in the Westerosi endgame have quite impressive episodes under their belt, so it’s no surprised they ended up here.

Returning to the fold after a season away, Sapochnik was responsible for helming some of the craziest episodes in the series’ history, including “Hardhome,” “Battle of the Bastards,” and “The Winds of Winter.” Nutter has directed six episodes of the series, including the iconic Red Wedding episode, “The Rains of Castamere,” as well as “The Dance of Dragons” and “Mother’s Mercy.” It should be noted that both Sapochnik and Nutter helmed the season five and season six two-part finale hours. Feels safe to say Benioff and Weiss did that for a reason—expect the epic, y’all!
