GAME OF THRONES Video Explores the Violent History of the Dragonpit

Game of Thrones biggest pow-wow took place in the ruins of the Dragonpit, when three rulers and their closest allies called a temporary truce so Jon Snow could put on a live-action wight show for Cersei and Daenerys. But long before those enemies came together for a tense (very long) face-to-face, that spot was a mighty symbol of the power and strength of House Targaryen. It became a living reminder of the house’s demise. Its bloody past is the subject of a fantastic new video from the show’s season seven home release.

The YouTube channel Westeros has an exclusive look at one of the new Histories and Lores that are included with the season seven Blu-ray (always the best part). Varys (Conleth Hill) and Qyburn (Anton Lesser) narrate the long and violent past of the Dragonpit, which was built on the hill where Maegor the Cruel bathed the Faith Militant in dragon flame. But while it allowed House Targaryen to keep their greatest power close by in King’s Landing, it also might have led to its demise because its walls stunted their growth.

That coy line from Qyburn about “how perhaps others intervened” to bring about the end of dragons is a reference to the theory the maesters of the Citadel conspired to kill them and end magic in the world. But while we might never know whether that’s true, one thing we do know is the Dragonpit was once a mighty monument to the power of dragons.

And now it’s a reminder they can be stopped.
