HBOâs Game of Thrones has largely stayed away from using flashbacks when fleshing out the world created by George R.R. Martin for his A Song of Ice and Fire novels. But even within the show itself, Game of Thrones has alluded to the Dance of the Dragons, a war so devastating that even the War of Five Kings could barely compare to the mayhem it left behind.
The Dance of the Dragons was the first civil war in the history of Westeros in which both sides had dragons at their command. Approximately 170 years before the events of Game of Thrones, House Targaryen was divided over who should sit on the Iron Throne. Queen Rhaenyra was the firstborn daughter of the late King Viserys I, but her half-brother, Aegon II, seized the throne for himself and threw the Seven Kingdoms into chaos.
The upcoming Game of Thrones Season 5 blu-ray will feature a 20-minute animated segment that explores the history of the Dance of the Dragons. IGN debuted the first preview from that segment, in which Rhaenyraâs husband (and uncle), Prince Daemon, and his dragon, Caraxes, take on Prince Aemond and his dragon, Vhagar. And in the Battle Above the Gods Eye, there may be no winner at all!
You may recognize the voice from the video as Pedro Pascal, the actor who portrayed Oberyn âThe Red Viperâ Martell in Game of Thrones Season 4. Pascal isnât the only former cast member to lend his voice to the featurette;Â Jack Gleeson, Mark Addy, Harry Lloyd, Kerry Ingram, and Michelle Fairley also contributed to the video.
Game of Thrones Season 5 will hit Blu-ray on March 15, 2016, roughly a month before season 6 begins on HBO.
