Game Boy Zero Is A Beast That Can Play Most Retro Games

Watch out Nintendo 3DS, the Game Boy is making a comeback! Well, sort of…

A modder named Wermy has turned his original Game Boy shell into an emulating machine. The new hardware named “Game Boy Zero,” uses Raspberry Pi Zero guts and a modified cartridge to play NES, SNES, and Game Boy games (all the way up to Game Boy Advance).

I know what you’re thinking: how is it possible to play some of these games without all the extra buttons? Well, Wermy has thought of it all. By drilling two holes in the front of the handheld, he was able to place two salvaged SNES buttons for use with newer games. Two screws in the back of the hardware were also ditched to add two trigger buttons. Problem solved!

A 3.5 inch color display was also added for obvious reasons. But that’s not all! The Zero includes a rechargeable battery, a USB port for charging said battery, a mini HDMI port if you want to display your games on the television, and a USB port for a keyboard or whatever else you may need. Then, Emulation Station is used to play all the games you want. Simply put, this thing is a beast.

Unfortunately, there are no instructions on how to craft one of these beasts at the moment. But, you could always try to figure it out yourself if you’d like. Peep the video above.

As for those of us lacking the skills to build one of these, there’s always the New Nintendo 3DS Virtual console, which now includes SNES games. Are you guys going to try and build one yourself? Are you happy with what’s already available on the 3DS Virtual Console? Let us know in the comments below!

Here’s what’s different about the New Nintendo 3DS XL.
