GAMBIT Movie Narrows Bella Donna Search to Three Actresses

Last week, Rebecca Ferguson wowed movie audiences with her starring turn in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. This week, Ferguson may be joining the X-Men spinoff film, Gambit… if she can get past two other actresses.

Ferguson, Lea Seydoux, and Abbey Lee are reportedly on director Rupert Wyatt’s shortlist to portray Bella Donna Boudreaux in Gambit opposite Channing Tatum’s title character. Seydoux is one of the latest Bond girls in Spectre, but she is also well known for her starring role in Blue is the Warmest Color. Lee appeared in Mad Max: Fury Road earlier this summer.

If the report is accurate, it makes perfect sense for Bella Donna to be the female lead in the Gambit film. In the comic book backstory for Gambit, Bella Donna was a member of the Assassins guild in New Orleans and the first love of Gambit’s life.

Gambit a.k.a. Remy LeBeau was an adopted member of the Thieves Guild, and his marriage to Bella Donna was arranged to merge the guilds and to prevent any further in-fighting among them. Shortly after his marriage, Remy was forced to duel Bella Donna’s brother, Julian and he was exiled from the city for seemingly killing Julian in self-defense. Bella Donna first appeared in X-Men Vol. 2 # 8 by Scott Lobdell and artist Jim Lee and she also appeared to die on her first team up with the X-Men before she was revived in a later story as an ongoing foil for Gambit.

If Bella Donna is in the Gambit film, then it probably means that other characters from Gambit’s comic book backstory are also going to be cast soon.

Gambit will begin shooting this fall before heading to theaters on October 7, 2016.
