Gael Garcia Bernal is the New ZORRO

He has been many different men—and we have loved him as them all—but it looks as though it is Gael García Bernal’s turn to put on the mask and swashbuckle his way into our hearts as the titular hero in a new Zorro film. The reboot project, currently titled Z, will find Bernal re-teaming with his Desierto helmer, Jonás Cuarón.

The news comes out of Cannes, per an exclusive report from Deadline, which states the action thriller will shoot in the Dominican Republic this fall. But if you think this is the same, post-apocalyptic Zorro film, Zorro Reborn, think again. Though Bernal was also reportedly attached to that Zorro project as well, it sounds as though plans for that iteration are no longer in play, eschewing the sci-fi element for something else. Cuarón’s version, for what it’s worth, is reported to take place in the near-future, however.

Nerdist has reached out for comment and will update this story if and when more details become available.

The character of Zorro has a rich history in popular culture. The character—perhaps most well known today as being portrayed by Antonio Banderas—has been around since 1919 when he was introduced to the world by Johnston McCulley. The cunning, suave, hilarious Robin Hood-type delighted in messing with authorities and having a sense of humor about it.

I mean, how could you not love a character who says things like, “Just one question. How would you like your remains displayed?” and “The pointy end goes into the other man,” right?
