FX Orders FARGO Season 3

Over the past two seasons, FX’s Fargo has quickly become one of the best ever movie-to-TV franchises. Today, the network confirmed that Fargo will return for a third season.

Joel and Ethan Coen wrote and directed the Fargo movie in 1996, and it was adapted for television by Noah Hawley. Instead of a direct adaptation, FX’s Fargo has been more of a thematic sequel that actually takes place in the same world as the film.

“Year two of Fargo is an extraordinary achievement and, given Noah Hawley’s masterful storytelling, we can’t wait to see where the third, all-new version of Fargo takes us,” said FX Co-President of Original Programing, Eric Schrier in a press release. “Our thanks to Noah, Warren, Joel & Ethan, John and our partners at MGM Television for making Fargo such a memorable and rewarding journey.”

The first season of Fargo took place in 2006, and featured Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman, Allison Tolman, and Colin Hanks in leading roles. Season two has shifted its focus to Lou Solverson (Patrick Wilson), the father of Tolman’s character, and Molly Solverson from the first season. The current storyline is unfolding in 1979 as Lou finds himself in the middle of a war between the Kansas City mafia and the Gerhardt crime family, with a hapless married couple, Peggy (Kirsten Dunst) and Ed Blumquist (Jesse Plemons) caught in the crossfire.

Hawley hinted at the storyline for season two during the first season of Fargo, so it’s possible that he could once again leave clues for the third season in the remaining four episodes of the current season.

FX’s announcement didn’t specify when Fargo season three will premiere, but Hawley will be back for the third season as showrunner and executive producer. FX has also lined up Hawley to write and produce Legion, an X-Men spinoff TV series that is expected to shoot a pilot episode early next year.
